Class List - Winter 2014 (Updated March 2015)

'CREATE A GIFT' CLASSES

These quick classes are designed to help you both learn a new technique and create a quick gift.  I've chosen heavier weight yarns and beautiful patterns so that you'll be able to finish completely and will be proud to give them as gifts.  I will teach each class on both Friday mornings and Saturday mornings.

Choose either day that works best for you.  We will start early and end early so that we can enjoy a fabulous class that won't take up too much time in this busy season.  Please come prepared with yarn and needles ready to start promptly at 9:00, so that we can end at 10:00.  Be sure to call ahead to sign up.

 

SUPER BULKY BEGINNER LACE COWL

This super quick, super bulky cowl is the perfect fast knit gift.  Once you've done one you'll be pumping them out all season long.  I made mine in an hour!  In the class, you'll bring your knitting skills from basic knits and purls to yarn over stitches and reading knitting charts.  We'll discuss finishing techniques like blocking, as well.  All you'll need is one skein of super bulky, like RASTA or ASAP.  We'll be time ahead if you cast on 18 sts. and knit 7 rows before class starts.  Check out the finished project at the shop or see http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/false-creek

MOEBIUS COWL

This class deviates from the one hour template to two hours to give you time to practice and learn this innovative technique and will only be offered on Saturday.  A moebius cowl is a scarf with a built in twist. The cast on is the trick!  In this class Liz Wilmerding will teach you how to do a double cable cast-on and knit a cowl from the center outward. This cowl knits up quickly and makes a beautiful and warm gift. Select your yarn, needles and cable ahead of time. See you on November 29!

STRANDED FAIR ISLE HAT

If you've ever wanted to learn how to do stranded colorwork this is a great way to start.  We'll discuss the basic tips for successfully working this technique while knitting this very fashionable hat.  Stop by the see the shop sample or see http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/fair-isle-hat-6209 .  Please make sure you cast on and work the ribbing before class starts.

CABLED BOOT TOPPER

These fashionable boot toppers will make great gifts for the boot lovers in your life (ME!) and this is a fabulous opportunity to learn how to make cables.  This is very doable technique for anyone who can knit and purl and work in the round.  I'm sure you'll see me wearing the samples or check them out at http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/cabled-boot-topper .

SLIP STITCH INFINITY SCARF

This simple technique can be used to make many patterns. GREAT AMERICAN ARAN AFGHAN

I have mentioned before my desire to both knit this afghan and use it as a means for teaching basic knitting techniques. This beautiful afghan is knit in squares using different stitch patterns, all designed by the readers of Knitter's magazine.  The magazine showed one pattern each month for twelve months. After 20 months you'd have the makings of a beautiful aran afghan.  We'll work one square each month and discuss all the techniques involved in completing that square.  You'll perfect your knitting skills and create this heirloom afghan all while learning many knitting tips and techniques.  Since you'll want your squares to be knit from the same dye lot you'll want purchase your yarn before the class starts, if possible.

Dates/Times:

The first Wednesday of each month, 9:00 - 10:00, beginning September 10.

There is a little space in this class if you want to jump in.  Stop in to talk to me to see if that's right for you.

The first Saturday of each month, 9:00 - 10:00, beginning January 3.

OR

The first Tuesday of each month, 9:00 - 10:00, beginning May 5.

HOW TO CROCHET:
In this five week course I'll teach you the basics of crochet.  We'll begin with how to hold your hook and yarn and work through all the basic crochet stitches.  Each week we'll focus on a new stitch, building a beautiful patterned scarf.

In this class you'll knit this fabulous one skein shawl all while learning all Sharon's tips for lace knitting as well as how to follow a lace chart. This is a modular knit triangular shawl so you can knit as many pattern repeats as you like until you are happy with the length.

BEGINNER SOCKS

Come and learn how to knit a basic sock along with Sharon Blatz.

You will learn classic knitting techniques and tips to both avoid common pitfalls and how create a perfect fit.

You can learn to knit on double point needles, 2 circulars or magic loop. For magic loop, please get at least a 40" circular. Swatch in stockinette and bring the right size needles for the gauge in the pattern.

Materials: pattern, yarn (should be wound and used in swatch before class), needles (as appropriate based on choice of technique above), typical accessories

Homework: completed gauge swatch to determine needle size

BEGINNING LACE/SHAWL

In this class, the lovely Homa Oscar, will guide you through all the techniques for completing a beautiful lace shawl.  Holden, http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/holden-2, is knit from the top down, with a simple stockinette body and an easy to memorize lace border.  It can be made using lace, fingering, or DK weight yarn for different effects.   The overall size can be customized by making either the stockinette or the lace sections larger or smaller.

LEARN TO CROCHET

BEGINNING LACE/SHAWL CLASS

The Frisson Shawl is a gorgeous asymmetrical long triangular shawl/scarf and the perfect project for learning how to work lace. Mesh lace is easy to memorize and a very popular current fashion trend. Between Joyce and Sasha and their respective classes, several have been made here.  Stop by and see some.

Class List - Summer 2014

CUSTOM FIT SOCKS

In this intermediate class, you will learn a unique sock heel construction that can be used when knitting toe up, or cuff down socks. You will make a cardboard template of your foot, and then be able to perfectly fit your socks with any weight of yarn, every time! There are no heel flaps or gussets, so no picking up stitches. This heel is similar to a store-bought sock heel and fits most feet comfortably. Please know the approximate gauge of your yarn before class.

Dates/Times: May 3 and May 31 from 9:00-12:00 and June 14 from 9:00 - 11:00

SUMMER VOGUE LACE TOP

The cover sweater and cowl set really caught our eye this spring! This sweater is knit top down with very little finishing.  If you have always wanted to learn how to do a top down raglan sweater in the round this class may be for you! Many techniques will be taught in this class including raglan shaping, short row bust shaping, provisional cast on, and icord bindoff. This top has lace detailing as well, for a fun and interesting knit. This will work up quickly in an Aran weight Egyptian Cotton. (Advanced beginner, Intermediate knitter)

ECHO FLOWERS LACE SHAWL

Join Sharon as we knit this gorgeous lace shawl. This class is for the intermediate or adventurous advanced beginning knitter. You will learn the crochet provisional cast on, various lace stitches, and nupps. This shawl is charted, and I will demystify reading charts for you in class.
